Good Stuff

I am so happy to announce that SAY THE WORD made YALSA's 2010 BBYA list along with novels written by so many friends, 2k7-ers, and fellow LJ-ers like Rosemary Clement-Moore (Highway to Hell) Jo Knowles (Jumping Off Swings) L.K. Madigan (Flash Burnout) Mary Pearson (The Miles Between) Maggie Stiefvater (Lament and Shiver!) Siobhan Vivian (Same Difference) Sara Zarr (Once Was Lost), and so many others.

Can any words express what it feels like to see my name alongside such fabulous authors as Laurie Halse Anderson, Libba Bray, Sarah Dessen, 2010 Newbery winner Rebecca Stead, Scott Westerfeld, and Carol Lynch Williams?

Nope. No words. :)

And while I'm full of good new, how can I not also mention that my Bloomsbury sister Carrie Jones debuted x 2 on the NYT Bestseller list with Need and Captivate? TWO BOOKS!!! Congrats, Carrie! And congrats, of course, to the rest of you, too!

Other than that, I'm speechless. For me, that's saying something.

First Lines Contest

Sometimes you only have one chance to capture a reader’s attention. Sometimes that chance lies in your very first sentence.

The classof2k7 is holding a FIRST LINES contest. 36 books, 36 first lines, and whoever matches the greatest number wins a collection of 2k7 arcs. Even if you don’t play, these first lines are fabulous! Deadline is May 18.

Not only was my first line changed in the editing process, so was the first paragraph...so was the first chapter. In fact the first chapter ended up becoming Chapter 3. Figuring out exactly WHAT my first chapter took up a huge chunk of the official editing process. Jill and I went back and forth literally for weeks, and when she suggested I simply write a new Chapter 1...bang! Perfect. It was one of those "tense" periods of revising you swear you'll never survive--whataretheydoingtomybook/ican'tdothis/leavemealone/helphelp/ichangedmymind!

Then when it's **OVER** you're utterly transformed. You looove your editor. You love your book. You love the world. You even start to feel a bit sorry for Paris Hilton. Well, maybe not. But everything is COOL.

Ruth Barshaw's ELLIE MCDOODLE: HAVE PEN, WILL TRAVEL! Kelly Bingham's: SHARK GIRL:

SHARK GIRL on Amazon: "On a sunny day in June, at the beach with her mom and brother, fifteen-year-old Jane Arrowood went for a swim. And then everything — absolutely everything — changed. Now she’s counting down the days until she returns to school with her fake arm, where she knows kids will whisper, "That’s her — that’s Shark Girl," as she passes. In the meantime there are only questions: Why did this happen? Why her? What about her art? What about her life? In this striking first novel, Kelly Bingham uses poems, letters, telephone conversations, and newspaper clippings to look unflinchingly at what it’s like to lose part of yourself - and to summon the courage it takes to find yourself again."

Cassandra Clare's CITY OF BONES:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket CITY OF BONES on Amazon: "When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died... Or was he a boy?"

and PROM DATES FROM HELL by Rosemary Clement Moore rclementmoore.

YAY! I'm happy.

Of course I shouldn't be reading at all. I'm supposed to be revising. I spent 10 hours on Shawna over the past 2 days, and today I came to a sad conclusion: no way in hell will I be done by the end of the month unless I revise seven days a week and refuse to go to my job--like that would upset me--or eat, or bathe.

Fine. I'll go to work. But nothing else. :)

Diet news, Day 5--

Me: 3 lbs down.
Beth: 4 lbs down.

I found a stray, rock-hard Twizzler in my glove compartment this morning. I threw it out. Normally I would've sucked it right down, lint and all, without hesitation. Ha! For this act alone I deserve a round of applause.
