Grapemo TEASER TUESDAY: Week 1

A great start to our bi-weekly teasers! Thanks to all who submitted. xox

"Wait," I said taking a step toward him but instead I woke up with a start, on the cold concrete floor of our family room. Relief washed over me. It was nothing but a really vivid dream after all. I uncrossed my legs to get up and noticed the dirt stains on my sole and on my right big toe. How did they get there? I checked my flip flops and they had no dirt stains at all. I realized that maybe the dream was more real than I thought at first. My heart sank and my stomach hurt. I bolted out of the room and made a bee line for the toilets.

I pushed the door across the thick carpet and squinted in the semi-dark. What little light leaked in through the heavy curtains gave the room a grayish hue. Dad was still in bed, his back to me, covers pulled up to his neck.

Just like last night, there was no answer.

“We’re going to be late for church.”

“Are you going to get up?”

I stepped further into the room, craning my neck, trying to see his face. I was pretty sure the blankets were lifting with his breathing, so at least he was alive.

He sighed, but didn’t move. “What?”

Another sigh, this one sounding like he carried the weight of the universe. “I’m not going.”

“Are you sick?”

“No.” He didn’t exactly sound convincing.

“Then what’s wrong?”

He left a pause so long I started to think he wasn’t going to answer me. Then, “I just… can’t today, Rachel.”

I didn’t understand what his problem was and he clearly wasn’t going to enlighten me. I backed out of the room and started to close the door but then my eyes fell on the calendar he kept by the dresser. And suddenly I knew. I closed my eyes, gripping the door frame. A hole opened up inside me, growing larger by the second. How could I have forgotten what today was? How could anyone forget the day their life had changed forever?

The boy's voice, unlike his smile, has no warmth at all. "This is about my birthday, right? Dad sent you?"

No. His dad would have a fit if he knew I was here. That's the point.

I swing my legs and stare.

"Look." He shrugs and the backpack thunks to the floor. "This...this is Dad's thing. Not mine. I don't—can you just tell him that we did whatever? I'll say you blew my mind and he won't have to know."

I blink.

A hooker. He thinks his dad bought him a birthday girl.

I'm moving up in the world.

But for all of that, it was an oddly still and peaceful morning. For a rare moment, she let herself lean against the gate post, closed her eyes and listened. She felt as if she was London. That she could feel the great city’s heartbeat matched her own, that the air she breathed was the breath of the city itself.

That’s when she heard it, somewhere beneath the approaching clamor of the cans, the clapping of hooves and the ring of iron wheels on cobbles, the shouts of the carters echoing in the dark. A low and broken moan.

Instantly, she was upright again, tense, remembering. Remembering the time before, when she was the moan in the dark, the anomaly in the alleyway. She knew what really breathed in the shadowy places. Not all of it evil or dangerous, most of it merely sad and wretched. But she had found a way out of the dark and did not care to be drawn back in. She turned, her hand on the gate, eyes on the faint light glowing from the kitchen window, ready to retreat when the moan turned into a word that stopped her.

The word was like a string that tangled, unwanted, about your feet on a windy day, a string she could not kick away.

Mr. Jacquith passes out “walking instructions” along with plastic pedometers that measure how far we walk each day. Instructions? What’s to instruct? All you do is put one foot in front of the other, right?

Apparently not. Mr. Jacquith rambles about the importance of warming up beforehand to prevent any damage to muscles and tendons. He demonstrates these exercises, and then, one by one, we have to demonstrate back.

“No, keep your foot flat on the floor,” he says, holding Isabelle’s foot with one hand, her leg with the other.

Isabelle, all fluttering lashes, flexes her calf under Mr. Jacquith’s fingers. While most of us changed into sweatpants before class, Isabelle’s idea of “comfortable clothes” is a tank top and Daisy Duke shorts. She shows off a dangly belly button ornament whenever she lifts her arms. I can’t remember the last time I saw my belly button.

“Now bend at the knee,” Mr. Jacquith continues, “and stretch your calf… That’s it, you got it.”

Isabelle beams. I gag. She should be suspended for that costume.

By the time my turn rolls around, I’ve got the stretching exercises down pat, thus preventing Mr. Jacquith from touching my legs. I hear snickers from the Isabellite section when says, “Good job, Gwyn.”

Isabelle hisses as I trudge back to the bleachers, “Nice pants, Gwyn. Too bad about that seam.”

My hand flies around to inspect my rear end. Omigod, it’s true—my sweatpants are ripped! I drop down, mortified between Eve and Theo, while the Isabellites bray and whinny.

Teasers are the best. I know some people are used to sharing their work. Others aren't. It takes a lot of guts in certain cases (and then, after you post it, you always notice the misspelled word or whatever, lol).
