GRAPEMO 2012 Day #14: TUESDAY TEASERS

Thank you, Kim and Kim! :-)

EL COMPUESTO

No, I couldn’t be found. The thought of being accused of being a dissenter would break Mami’s heart.
I scrambled back to my feet and ran as fast as I could. The cool air hit my face and dried up my tears.
I stumbled past the cemetery, past the older apartments until I got to my own home.

Please be home, Xochil.

I yanked the door open.

Candle light revealed long shadows in our apartment.

“What were you thinking?” My stepfather stepped out of the shadows. He hissed, then pulled the curtain shut.

“Why were you out? You know the rules.”

Another candle in the far corner revealed the darkened face of mami. She clutched her fraying robe close to her body. Even in the candle lit room, her weariness spoke volumes.

How I wished for a pill.

A small yellow pill.

It would solve all my problems.

CANAL BOY
Kim V

The bare branches of the trees lining the canal stabbed the sky like giant stalagmites. Soon it would be too cold to run the boat any longer this year. Diamond tossed his head and Coal sidestepped and whinnied. Warren shivered and stuck his hands in his pockets. It wasn’t just the chill of evening in late November that set the donkeys and their twelve-year-old muleskinner on edge. The cemetery at the outskirts of Boston Village loomed into view.

Warren never could seem to pass by the final resting ground for the canalers who perished either building or working the Ohio and Erie Canal without feeling like he was being watched. He flipped up the frayed collar of his coat and peered over his shoulder at the canal boat gliding quiet as a ghost next to him.

Ghosts. That was what he was afraid of seeing. The men buried in that cemetery died of disease like cholera and too much drink. Some died in tragic accidents and some, it was well-known, had been murdered. Warren didn’t want to run into any spirits, let alone angry ghosts who might want to avenge their untimely deaths.
