GRAPEMO DAY #9: THURSDAY TEASERS

EL COMPUESTO

I leaned back against my pillow, closed my eyes, and waited for Jorge to materialize out of the corner of my subconscious. Tall, not too thin with a muscular build, he strolled down the steps of the auditorium. With each step, my heart beat so hard I thought for sure my chest would rupture. Some other girls whispered and pointed at him, but he ignored them all. He only looked at me. Not Araceli, who threw herself at him, or any of the others.

Only me.

FIRESPELL

A woman pressed against Tara's dressing table, sorting through her few pieces of jewelry. She was beautiful with shimmering black hair that just skimmed her shoulders. Her petite features gave the appearance of frailty, a statue blown in glass. There seemed something vaguely familiar about her, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
Aed knew at once that she searched for Danu's amulet, and he let her look, not bothering to interrupt her quiet sorting. She turned her head towards him, looked right at him, let her gaze assess him thoroughly, smiled an odd, proud little grin, and turned back to her work.

He noticed her dress then, a hot pink and black polka dot sundress that reeked of class and money. What kind of lunatic robbed someone in an outfit like that? He laughed a loud when he saw the spiked black heels adding a good three inches to her five foot seven frame. Perfect for a quick get away. The women raised an eyebrow in his direction but continued to ignore him as she slipped open a drawer and flipped through the papers.

His patience snapped. "Find what you're looking for?" She froze. For an instant, he thought he saw fear flicker in her eyes. Her face smoothed, and she turned to face him. She studied him, her beautiful lips curling in a delicate, silent pout. He appreciated her control, but he wasn't used to being ignored, and he didn't like the obvious second appraisal as if she were reevaluating her first assessment. "I'll ask this once more, and then I'll feel obliged to act on my instincts. Who are you, and how did you get in?"

Her face lost all emotion as if shielded by a mask of ice. "You can see me?"
