Monday Ramble

A half-wasted weekend only. :)

Saturday: revised all day. Knocked out one POV and the second one has just about been eliminated. Of course this involves writing new scenes, which I am not enjoying as much as I thought I would. When I write the original atory, I fall into a comforting rhythm. I know my characters, I know what they sound like, I know what each of them will say in a given circumstance. It flows pretty smoothly.

Writing new scenes, however, after the novel has been completed for nearly a year...well, that's another story. I have to--God forbid--think about it. But it's moving along and, with any lucky, the two POVs will be buried by the end of the day.

Sundaythis was the wasted day as far as writing is concerned. First, I spent the morning watching West Side Story. Yes, I'm a Broadway geek and I couldn't say no. Then Beth and I ran up to the mall; she needed jeans, and I needed a purse because mine was: A. too small, and B. already 3 months old.

I love purses. I buy purses the way some people buy shoes. But I rarely find one that meets all my needs. Specifically, I need a purse that:

1. is leather. Soft leather, not saddle leather.
2. big enough for all my junk, including whatever book I'm reading--but not suitcase-sized.
3. has dividers inside, not one massive black hole.
4. does NOT have all that jingling hardware on the outside (chains, danglies, zippers-leading-to-nowhere, etc) or other decorative crap.
5. does not blast the maker's name all over it, especially if the designer is someone I never heard of. :p
6. has a frickin shoulder strap! Why are these so hard to find on larger handbags? Nobody has shoulders anymore?
7. has inner pockets with zippers.
8. is a color I like, preferably black, brown, or gray, but I've been known to spring for fuschia, aqua, and burgundy.
9. doesn't weigh a ton.
10. smells like leather, not dead fish.
One purse I instantly fell in love with. But when I picked it up to examine it more closely, the security cable snapped it out of my hands. Sticker price? $358. Big deal, right?

11. is within my budget.

Despondent, I hit every other shelf in the store, digging and tossing, till I finally found one that met all my criteria except for # 5 (the brand name is on it). Regular price: $85.00. Macy's sale price: $22.00

Then, because I couldn't just Buy A Purse And Go Home, I also picked up PJs, underwear, and a $40 shrug ($12.00 on sale--like I'd pay forty bucks for half a sweater?) and then headed home. I did a bit of revising, but it's too hard to work at home. No point in going to Borders in the middle of the afternoon. I'd never get a table with an outlet.

So, eventually, I ran out to Subway and then curled up on the couch and played around online till it was time to watch the Academy Awards.

TODAY I'm heading out at 12:30 to work on my edits till 6:30 and then meeting up with some friends from work.

And today, the last day of GRAPEMO, will be productive. I'm not taking no for an answer.

I agree with all the criteria except mine doesn't have to be real leather and it has to close with zippers, no flaps, snaps, or velcro. This comes from having worked in cockroach country. I don't want to bring my purse home loaded with passengers, ew.

Ew, I didn't think of that. And I work in a HOSPITAL.

I'm Sorry,
but, after years of exhaustive research, I have come to the conclusion that perfect bag does not exist. I have an entire dressing room full of evidence to support my findings. Too big, too small, bulky, flimsy, wrong color, right color - wrong style, no pockets, too many pockets, fine for spring - useless for winter, straps too short, straps too long, no straps at all, tips over too easily, no closure, sticky closure, (shudder) velcro closure...

I weep for huwomanity.

Re: I'm Sorry,
And I HATE switching purses. I like mine to be all-purpose, all-season, all-outfit, all-everything!
