TEASER TUESDAY: GRAPEMO WEEK 3

PRESCIENCE
feonua

The bathroom door flies open, and a girl rushes in. She leans back against the door as it closes, eyes shut tight like a kid’s. She’s pale all over, from her tear-stained cheeks to her blonde hair to her skin so translucent white it’s almost blue.

“Oh, look,” says Samantha. “Company. What up, inbred?”

The girl jumps, eyes flying open. I don’t know her, but at a guess I’d say she’s one of the McKines. Not all blondes are pure bloods, but most are.

Sam gives her the once over. “You look like hell.”

“I-I-I’m sorry,” the girls stammers, drawing out the letters more than repeating them. “I-I didn’t mean to intrude. I-I’ll go.”

Sam sighs. “Just for the record, when someone tells you that you look like hell, the correct response is ‘so do you.’ ”

I lean forward. The girl's Maisy’s age, maybe younger. “You ok?”

She nods. “Yeah, I-I’m fine.”

“Sure you are,” says Sam. “So princess, what’s your woe of woes?”

“Shut up Sam,” I say.

Then my worst nightmare came strutting down the hallway. I swear some imaginary fan blew her color enhanced blond hair back and some music only I heard announced Sutter’s princess’s arrival.

Any euphoria I’d felt this morning had plummeted like a huge boulder in an avalanche with my thought that I might actually have something over her. As if.

She sauntered over, with her flock of groupies crowding around. You wouldn’t know she’d just seen a dead girl the other night and totally freaked out. No, if anything she seemed confident and if this was possible nastier.

BREATHKEPT

Looking from me to Parker, he said, "Jon found a body."

"It's not Dad?" I repeated.

Horrified, Teddy shook his head. "No. Absolutely not."

"Then who is it?" Parker asked.

"We don't know. The coyotes got there first, and..."

Parker's lips parted, like she wanted to say something, but she didn't know how.

With a look, she caught me in her dark gaze and rubbed at the scarf that covered her hair. I wanted to save her, but I didn't know from what. Maybe death. Maybe bad news.

Maybe me.

BLUE VISIONS

Gio walked as calmly as she could from Sally’s house to her own, four blocks away. Neighbors waved and greeted her as if nothing had happened. But something had. Something horrific. With every breath she fought not to scream, not to cry. Her heart crashed against her ribs as if trying to break free of its cell.

Gio unlocked the front door, closed it behind her and slid down its smooth surface. Sweat dampened her forehead. She drew one deep breath then two, but that only worsened the need to shout at the top of her lungs that she was sorry. So sorry. The scream burst forth with so much power the pages of the latest Southern Living magazine sitting on her coffee table fluttered open before slowly drifting closed with a sigh of sorrow.

If Rory clenches his jaw any harder he’ll crack every tooth in his mouth. “I don’t know what it’s like where you come from. But first of all, I’m not ‘hanging all over’ you—I’m headed the same way you’re headed and if you’d rather not walk with me, then say so. Second of all, I was brought up to be nice to people, which appears to be a foreign concept to you. Thirdly—”

“Is that a word? Thirdly?” I ask, hoping to temper his tirade. I didn’t mean to hurt his feelings if that’s what happened here.

Thirdly I…” He stares at the whirlpool of leaves circling our feet. “For some stupid reason I guess I kinda like you.”

Startled, I blurt, “Why?”

“Beats me. Maybe because you’re the only girl around here I haven’t known since kindergarten?” He nods at my un-Mayberry-like boots. “You’re, uh, interesting. Some folks think that’s a crime ’round these parts.”

I'm ridiculously flattered. “You really like me?”

“If you get down off your high horse and lose the attitude, I sincerely might." A lopsided grin. “Now, do you want to take a walk or don't you? I can show you the sites.”

I snicker. “Oh, golly, the sites! Sorry,” I add quickly. “Attitude. I know.”
